Adaptogens for Hair: What the Research Shows (And What It Doesn't)
Share
Your scalp has opinions. Sometimes they're calm, sometimes they're angry, and most of the time they're reacting to whatever you've been through that week.
Maybe it's tight and tense. Maybe it's flaking or itchy. Maybe it just feels—well, not great. And you know somehow that when your scalp isn't happy, your hair isn't either. That's not a coincidence. Your scalp is skin, and like the skin on your face, it responds to its environment: weather, product buildup, how you're sleeping, how you're feeling.
That's where adaptogens come in. But probably not in the way you've heard.
We're Aliis, and we built our brand around one idea: healthy scalp, healthy hair. So when we added adaptogens to our core products, it wasn't because they're trendy or because we were chasing the wellness buzz. It was because they support what we're actually trying to do: help your scalp be the best home for your hair.
What Adaptogens Actually Do (The Short Version)
Adaptogens are plants that have been used for centuries to help the body adapt to stress and maintain balance. Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), the main adaptogen we use, is one of the most studied—and it's known for its calming, balancing properties.
Your scalp, like the rest of you, reacts to what's going on around and within you—tension, environmental stress, everyday wear and tear can all show up there in small ways. Ashwagandha helps soothe that response.
Think of it less as a treatment and more as groundwork. It gives your scalp a chance to settle down and stay balanced, which matters more than people realize when you're layering on other ingredients that are actually doing the heavy lifting.
Why We Added Them to Aliis
A calm, balanced scalp is a primed scalp. It's ready to actually benefit from the active ingredients doing the heavy lifting.
In our Daily Shampoo and Daily Conditioner, ashwagandha works alongside Vitamin F Forte (linoleic and linolenic acids) and DayMoist CLR (beet extract and hydrolyzed corn starch)—those are the ingredients with real work to do. Vitamin F Forte supports your scalp barrier, helping it hold onto moisture and stay resilient. DayMoist brings hydration and helps your scalp retain it. But barrier support and hydration land differently on a scalp that's already stressed or reactive versus one that's calm and settled.
That's the role adaptogens play here. They're not always the star ingredient. They're more like the ideal condition the star ingredients need to actually perform. Skip the adaptogen, and Vitamin F Forte and DayMoist still work, just not as efficiently, because they're fighting an unsettled environment instead of building on a calm one.
It's not glamorous. It's not a headline ingredient you'll see plastered across packaging. But it's the real reason they're in there, and we think that's worth explaining rather than just slapping "with adaptogens!" on a label and calling it a day.
Quick clarification, since wellness marketing loves to blur this line: ashwagandha is technically an adaptogen—it works broadly, helping your body's stress response normalize overall. Gotu kola and turmeric, which are also in these formulas, get grouped under "adaptogens" a lot online, but they work through more targeted mechanisms: gotu kola supports skin barrier health and soothes irritation, and turmeric brings antioxidant and calming properties.
All three end up supporting the same goal—a settled, balanced scalp—just via different pathways. We'd rather call them what they are than round them all up under one trendy label.
Adaptogens + Your Aliis Routine
Ashwagandha is in five of our core products: Daily Shampoo, Daily Conditioner, Sea Salt Spray, Hair Masque & Butter, and Dry Shampoo. The ashwagandha we use is sourced from the roots, not the leaves.
Use the Daily Shampoo and Daily Conditioner consistently—that's where the synergy happens. If your scalp is feeling particularly reactive or sensitive, the Hair Masque & Butter on a weekly basis gives your scalp extra soothing time to do its thing.
And if you're using the Sea Salt Spray for texture on non-wash days, spray it on your strands, not directly on your scalp—it's a styling product, not a scalp treatment. (Get it on your hair, and you're still getting the ashwagandha benefit without the salt buildup on your scalp.)
The Dry Shampoo is there for your off-wash-day scalp, too—so even when you're not washing, you're supporting that calm, balanced environment.
The Healthy Scalp Philosophy
The philosophy is simple: when your scalp is healthy, your hair is healthy. That doesn't mean medicated, and it doesn't mean complicated. It means balanced, calm, and supported—the same way you'd think about caring for the skin on your face, just with a different set of ingredients suited to a different job.
Adaptogens are one piece of that. They're not doing the visible work. They're doing the quiet work that lets everything else function properly. The rest is consistency: using the right shampoo and conditioner daily, deep conditioning when your scalp or hair needs it, and not stripping your scalp with sulfates or overwashing.
Adaptogens don't fix your hair on their own. They help your scalp be ready to support it—and support everything else you're putting on it.
