Those Scary-Sounding Ingredients? A Lot of Them Are Just Sugar and Coconut

If you've ever flipped a hair product to the back label and immediately regretted it, you're not alone. 

Ingredient lists read like a chemistry exam nobody studied for: 

  • Cocamidopropyl Hydroxysultaine
  • Sodium Lauryl Glucose Carboxylate
  • Disodium Lauryl Sulfosuccinate

Twelve syllables in and your brain has already filed it under "definitely not natural."

Here's the disconnect: a long name doesn't mean synthetic, harsh, or scary. It means the ingredient has to follow a strict international naming system, and that system was built for precision, not marketing. 

A lot of the most intimidating-looking names on a label are just sugar or coconut oil that's been gently restructured to do a specific job, like cleansing or conditioning, without stripping your scalp in the process.

We're not saying every long name is secretly harmless. But two categories in particular get an unfair reputation for being over-processed lab creations when they're actually derived from things you'd recognize in a fruit bowl (or a bag of sugar): anything with "glucoside" in the name, which almost always traces back to sugar, and anything built around "cocamido," "lauryl," "cetearyl," or "cocoate," which almost always traces back to coconut oil.

This is exactly the kind of thing we care about at Aliis. We're not about to get squeamish when a coconut derivative has a complicated name. If anything, it's the opposite: the more people understand what these names actually mean, the easier it is to tell the difference between an ingredient that's genuinely worth questioning and one that's just coconut oil that went to grad school.

Why Ingredient Names Look Like This in the First Place

Every cosmetic ingredient sold in the US and EU has to use something called an INCI name (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients). 

It's a standardized naming system so a chemist in Tokyo and a chemist in Toronto are talking about the exact same molecule. INCI names often use Latin plant names, chemical suffixes, or both, which is why "coconut oil" becomes Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, and a coconut-derived cleanser becomes something with five syllables and a hyphen.

The naming system isn't hiding anything. If anything, it's the opposite: it's forcing brands to be exact about origin and structure instead of just writing "gentle cleansing agents" and calling it a day.

Bucket One: Sugar Wearing a Disguise

Any time you see "glucoside" in an ingredient name, that's your sugar tell. 

These are mild, low-irritation cleansing agents made by bonding a sugar molecule (usually derived from corn or coconut) to a fatty alcohol. The result is a surfactant that can lift away oil and buildup without the stripped, squeaky-clean-but-actually-damaged feeling that harsher sulfates can leave behind.

Common examples you'll spot on labels across the industry: 

  • Decyl Glucoside
  • Coco-Glucoside
  • Lauryl Glucoside
  • Caprylyl/Capryl Glucoside

A few of these show up in our own formulas too. Our Daily Shampoo uses Lauryl Glucoside and Sodium Lauryl Glucose Carboxylate as part of its cleansing base, and our Sea Salt Spray includes Sorbitan Oleate Decylglucoside Crosspolymer, which helps the formula stay stable and evenly dispersed.

Sugar-derived surfactants are also part of why a sulfate-free shampoo can still work up a lather. They're doing similar cleansing work through a gentler mechanism.

Bucket Two: Coconut, Restructured

This is the bigger bucket, and it's where most of the genuinely alarming-looking names live. 

Coconut oil is rich in fatty acids, and chemists can break those fatty acids apart and recombine them into new structures with very different jobs: foam boosters, thickeners, conditioning agents, mild cleansers. 

Each new structure gets its own INCI name, which is why one humble coconut can end up responsible for a dozen different-looking label entries.

Look for prefixes and fragments like cocamido-, lauryl, cetearyl, capryl-, cetyl, glyceryl, and cocoate.

Across the industry, that includes names like Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, Sodium Coco-Sulfate, Decyl Cocoate, and Cocamide MEA. 

Several show up in Aliis formulas specifically: our Daily Shampoo contains Cocamidopropyl Hydroxysultaine and Disodium Lauryl Sulfosuccinate, both coconut-derived cleansing agents, while our Daily Conditioner and Hair Masque & Butter use Cetearyl Alcohol, Lauryl Laurate, Cetyl Palmitate, Caprylhydroxamic Acid, and Glyceryl Heptanoate for texture, conditioning, and stability. 

Betaine, which shows up in several of our formulas including our Clarifying Shampoo and Lightweight Conditioner, is a bit of an honorary member of this club too. It's more often sourced from sugar beets, but it does the same kind of mild, skin-conditioning work as its coconut-derived cousins.

None of this means every coconut-derived ingredient is automatically gentle just because coconut sounds nice. Structure matters more than origin. But it does mean the name alone isn't a reliable way to judge whether something is harsh or synthetic.

A Quick Decoder for Your Next Label Read

  • Next time you're squinting at a label, here's a shortcut:
  • Contains "glucoside" → sugar-derived, mild cleansing 
  • Starts with "cocamido" or "coco-" → coconut-derived, usually a cleanser or foam booster 
  • Starts with "lauryl," "cetyl," or "cetearyl" → often a coconut-derived fatty alcohol, usually for texture or conditioning Starts with "capryl-" or ends in "cocoate" → coconut-derived, usually an emollient or thickener 
  • Ends in "-ate" attached to a fatty alcohol name → typically an ester, meaning two ingredients (often one coconut-derived) have been chemically joined for a specific texture or stability job
  • This isn't a complete decoder ring for every ingredient list you'll ever read. But it covers a chunk of what shows up in hair care specifically, and it's usually enough to turn "what on earth is this" into "oh, that's just coconut again."

Between the raw oil and its dozen or so lab-restructured relatives, coconut is doing a lot more work in your hair care routine than most labels let on. Reading the list a little more closely, instead of just bracing for it, is usually all it takes.
