What Is Sea Kelp Even Doing In Your Hair Care?

What Is Sea Kelp Even Doing In Your Hair Care?

If you've been anywhere near a beauty shelf lately, you've noticed sea kelp is having a moment.

It's showing up in shampoos, conditioners, scalp serums, face creams, body lotions… basically anywhere a brand can fit the word "marine" into a product description. And like any ingredient that suddenly appears everywhere at once, it's fair to ask: is this actually doing something, or is it just riding a wave?

The thing is, kelp genuinely earns its place. It's not a trend ingredient with a good PR team. It's a remarkably complex organism that happens to be exceptionally good at a few things hair and scalp care have always needed.

The problem is that most products using "kelp extract" aren't being very specific about what kind of kelp, how it was processed, what's actually in it, or why any of that matters. The label says kelp. The story kind of stops there. Talk about a cliffhanger.

We recently launched our Sea Salt Spray powered by Big Kelp Hydration™, a clinically-backed kelp ingredient that we chose very deliberately and for very specific reasons.

So we figured: who better to break down what sea kelp is actually doing in your hair care than us? Consider this your deep dive. We're going to cover the science, the sourcing, the sustainability story, and exactly why we think kelp is one of the most exciting ingredients in hair care right now.

Kelp Has Been Here the Whole Time

Sea kelp isn't new. It's been nourishing ocean ecosystems and coastal communities for centuries, quietly doing its thing in cold, pristine waters while the rest of the world went about its business. Indigenous and coastal communities have long understood what kelp brings to the table. The beauty industry, on the other hand, is only just catching up.

Here's what made us pay attention: we were developing our new Sea Salt Spray and facing the same problem every sea salt spray has always faced. Salt creates texture. Salt also dries your hair out. Those two facts have always come as a package deal, until we started looking at what kelp actually does at a molecular level and realized we'd found exactly what we were looking for.

But before we get into the Sea Salt Spray, let's talk about the ingredient itself. Because kelp deserves a proper introduction.

Not All Kelp Is Created Equal

Here's something worth knowing before you start scanning ingredient lists: "kelp extract" on a product label doesn't tell you very much. Extracts can be made from multiple species, sourced from different parts of the world, processed using harsh chemicals, and diluted to concentrations so low they're essentially decorative. The word kelp is doing a lot of heavy lifting for not a lot of actual kelp.

Big Kelp Hydration™ is different, and the difference starts before it ever reaches a formula.

The kelp used in Big Kelp Hydration™ is grown exclusively on regenerative farms in pristine Alaskan waters, farms run by independent fishermen and Native communities who have been working with Macro Oceans since 2021.

Every farm goes through a rigorous permitting process that evaluates potential impact on maritime traffic, wildlife, and the local ecosystem. Throughout the growing season, the kelp is monitored and harvested at peak bioactivity, meaning the moment when its beneficial compounds are most potent.

And every single batch is fully traceable back to the farmer who grew it (you’ll see the name of the farmer is on every pack. That level of transparency is rare in the ingredient supply chain, and it matters.

Once harvested, the kelp is processed using a gentle aqueous extraction method with mild temperatures and zero harsh chemicals. This careful process isolates and preserves the two star compounds that make Big Kelp Hydration™ so effective — fucoidan and laminarin (more on them in just a second) — at a 50% concentrated bioactive level. Nothing gets wasted either, but we'll get to that in a moment.

What's Actually Inside Kelp That Makes It So Good For Hair

Inside Big Kelp Hydration™ are two marine polysaccharides — fucoidan and laminarin (hi, again!) — that happen to be remarkably well suited to solving some of hair care's most persistent problems. Don't let the science-y names put you off. These two compounds basically do for your hair what a really good conditioner wishes it could do.

Fucoidan is naturally hygroscopic, meaning it attracts and holds onto moisture. It also forms a film over the hair cuticle that creates a balanced, sealed environment along the hair fiber. Think of it less like a force field and more like a thermostat, keeping your hair's internal moisture levels exactly where they should be, and preventing excess humidity from getting in and causing the kind of chaos that shows up as frizz, static, and flyaways. The result is hair that stays soft and defined rather than puffing up every time the weather has an opinion.

Laminarin works alongside fucoidan as a complementary film-former. Its hydroxyl-rich structure forms hydrogen bonds with the keratin in your hair, creating a lightweight coating that adds cohesion, smooths the cuticle, and improves overall manageability. It also has antioxidant properties that help counteract the kind of damage that comes from UV exposure and heat styling.

Together, these two compounds don't just treat frizz as a symptom. They address the underlying moisture imbalance that causes it in the first place. Which is a meaningfully different thing.

What Kelp Does For Your Scalp (Not Just Your Hair)

At Aliis, everything starts with one question: Is this good for your scalp? So when we say we're excited about Big Kelp Hydration™, it's not just because of what it does to the hair fiber. It's because of what it does further up.

Laminarin has been shown in peer-reviewed research to help decrease inflammatory responses in the scalp and support the scalp's barrier function, that protective layer that keeps moisture in and environmental stressors out. A healthy scalp barrier means less irritation, less dryness, and a better foundation for healthy hair growth overall.

Fucoidan contributes here too. Its film-forming and moisture-retaining properties extend to the scalp itself, helping maintain the kind of calm, balanced environment that your scalp needs to do its job well. When your scalp is balanced, it's not overproducing oil to compensate for dryness, not getting irritated by styling products, and not throwing a tantrum every time the seasons change.

The Zero Waste Story

This part of the kelp story doesn't get talked about enough, and we think it should.

Kelp is one of the most sustainable crops on the planet. It requires no land, no irrigation, no fertilizer, and no pesticides. It grows using nothing but ocean energy and time. And as it grows, it actively improves the marine environment around it, reducing ocean acidification and creating habitat for ocean life. Compare that to corn, which requires 71kg of fertilizer per hectare, 0.5 million litres of fresh water, and generates 1.7kg of CO2 per hectare. Kelp needs none of the above. Literally zero across all three.

But the sustainability story doesn't stop at the farm. Macro Oceans processes Big Kelp Hydration™ using a zero-waste biorefinery method, meaning every part of the kelp plant gets used for something. The polysaccharides become Big Kelp Hydration™. What's left over gets upcycled into other high-performance biomaterials including cellulose fiber and alginate. Nothing goes to waste. Not a strand.

When you buy a product containing Big Kelp Hydration™, you're supporting regenerative marine agriculture, providing economic opportunities for independent fishermen and Native communities in Alaska, and participating in a supply chain that's been built from the ground up to leave things better than it found them. That's a lot for one ingredient to carry — and it carries it well.

What The Clinical Data Actually Shows

We're not big on making claims we can't back up. So here's what the research actually shows, in plain language.

On skin, Big Kelp Hydration™ has been clinically proven to deliver an 80% immediate increase in hydration compared to a placebo, and a 26% immediate improvement in skin barrier function, both measured within the first five minutes of application. Those are meaningful numbers, and they're backed by in-vivo clinical studies, not lab simulations.

On hair, independent testing showed that Big Kelp Hydration™ reduced frizz by an average of 10.5% when used in a leave-on serum application, and 7.6% when incorporated into a shampoo formula. This represents real, measurable improvement from an ingredient that's simultaneously doing a whole range of other beneficial things for your hair and scalp. That's the kind of result that compounds over time.

The picture that emerges is of an ingredient that works, not in a flashy, promise-everything way, but in a steady, evidence-backed, genuinely-good-for-your-hair way. Which, around here, is exactly what we're looking for.

How We're Using It — The Sea Salt Spray Connection

So that brings us back to where we started.

Our Sea Salt Spray uses Big Kelp Hydration™ alongside European Sea Salt — chosen for its balanced mineral profile of magnesium, calcium, and potassium — and a touch of Dead Sea salt for its concentrated mineral content. The dual-salt system creates texture. Big Kelp Hydration™ makes sure that texture doesn't come at the expense of your hair's moisture balance or your scalp's health.

The formula also includes Vitamin F Forte, which provides essential fatty acids to reinforce the scalp's natural barrier function, and DayMoist CLR™, made from hydrolyzed corn starch and beet root extract, which works at the hair shaft level to improve elasticity and protect against heat damage. Every ingredient is in there for a reason, and Big Kelp Hydration™ is what ties the whole formula together.

The result is a sea salt spray that actually does what sea salt spray has always promised — effortless texture, soft waves, real volume — without the crunch, the dryness, or the static that most sea salt sprays have always come with as standard.

The Ocean Has Good Ideas

Kelp has been quietly perfecting moisture retention, barrier support, and anti-inflammatory properties for a very long time. It didn't need the beauty industry to validate it. But we're glad the conversation is finally happening, and we're glad we can be part of telling it properly, with the sourcing transparency, clinical backing, and scalp-first philosophy it deserves.

Healthy scalp. Healthy hair. And now, a healthy planet too.

If you're ready to see what Big Kelp Hydration™ actually feels like on your hair, our Sea Salt Spray is the place to start.
